The company specializes in executive gifts, awards, promotional products, and glass and acrylic awards. D & S Awards also etches wine bottles and hand paints customer logos, labels or other messages. D & S is the only provider in Santa Rosa that can etch glass, which gives them a have a distinct advantage over their competition.
The Challenge: Creating perfect wine bottle labels.
Dennis Wilkinson, owner of D & S Awards, tells us about one of his most rewarding challenges involved 3,500 wine bottles of varying sizes, all featuring the same “skull and crossbones” label. The bottles each had a silk screened message on the back. All were painted and waxed in red, and some were pink. With the same design on each bottle, Dennis tells us the project turned into more of a production line order.
The Solution:
For this project Dennis used the Epilog Legend 32 for the large bottles and to start off production until pre-made masks arrived. The job was finished with pre-made masks in an effort to work more quickly. With such intricate detail on the labels, he said his biggest challenge was to have the masks stick exactly where they were supposed to so that each bottle looked the same. Dennis mentioned height and alignment on that many bottles can be quite a chore.
Result: The results are pictured below – a total of 3,500 wine bottles of varying sizes, all bearing the same intricate “Poizin” label per the customer’s request.
Total Time: From start to finish the project took about four months, though Dennis tells us the customer was not in a huge hurry. Popular among wine-groupies, we learned some buyers purchase an entire series of the bottles, and so it is customary for bottles to sell out prior to the next batch being created. Oakland Raider fans can rejoice while waiting for D & S Awards’ next run: a silver label version.
